Education and social stigmas (Educação e estigmas sociais) in Pica-Pau

“People are ill-equipped to tackle the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities in front of them,” said Irenaldo Honorio da Silva, President of the Residents' Association of Pica-Pau. “They graduate from school without really learning how to write. They spell estágio (internship) with a ‘j’ on their applications. And there are stigmas. They say that in Brazil, there’s no prejudice, but there is prejudice. In the middle of it all, it’s easy to feel powerless.” Some residents turn to drugs and crime, driven by this sense of inefficacy and economic stagnancy.

“As pessoas estão mal preparadas para enfrentar os desafios e aproveitar as oportunidades oferecidas,” disse Irenaldo Honorio da Silva, o presidente da Associação dos Moradores do Pica-Pau. "Os jovens se formam na escola sem ao menos saberem escrever. Eles soletram estágio com j em suas provas. E ainda há estigmas. Eles dizem que no Brasil não há preconceito, mas existe. E em meio a tudo isso é fácil se sentir impotente.” É esse senso de ineficácia que leva alguns moradores para crime e drogas.
